Also take the time to contemplate the exceptional diversity of the flore present all around you. The Vanoise National Park alone represents a third of the flora of France with nearly 1700 species of vascular plants recorded.

Awaken your curiosity by coming to discover theEspace Alu, the aluminum museum in Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne (25 minutes by car from Valmeinier). Aluminum and Maurienne is a story that has lasted for over 100 years! Take part in an entertaining and fun visit immersing you in the epic of the valley and its aluminum production factories. Marvel at collections of rare and unusual objects while admiring the ingenuity of techniques from the 19th century to today.

Espace Alu

Another essential in the sector, the Opinel Museum awaits you in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (35 to 40 minutes by car from Valmeinier). With nearly 50 annual visitors, this free museum traces the origins of the famous Savoyard knife. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, let yourself be surprised by the great history and the major events that have contributed to its fame. The visits are suitable for all audiences with fun materials and brochures translated into foreign languages. In addition, take advantage of a visit to the city to contemplate the two giant monuments in the shape of Opinel. Located at the Arves roundabout and on the Combe skate park, they will come to end your visit in style.

Italy a stone's throw away

Located in the heart of the Alps, Valmeinier is at the gates of Italy. Whether from Lyon, Chambéry or even Albertville, the Maurienne valley is the busiest and fastest route to reach Turin ou Milan. From Valmeinier, you just have to go down to Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne to find the motorway leading to our Italian neighbours.

Following the landslide which took place in Maurienne, rail traffic to and from Italy via Modane is interrupted. The SNCF and the region are working to put in place alternative solutions. As we receive new information, we will keep you informed.

On the other hand, access via the motorway has been restored.

A land of cycling

Whether you are a simple cyclist or a climber at heart, the Maurienne has multiple cycling routes for all levels. The most sporty and motivated will be able to set off on the ascent of mythical passes of the Tour de France such as:

  • The Telegraph and the Galibier
  • Iseran
  • La Madeleine
  • The Glandon and the "Croix de Fer"
What to do around Valmeinier

Also very popular with cyclists, the Montvernier Laces offer a memorable and original outing. No less than 18 spectacular switchbacks await you for a dizzying ascent. To get there, count a good half-hour drive to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the climb to Montvernier is just after.
